Eastside Memorial A Casey Family Funeral Home and Tribute Center’s construction was completed in the winter of 2012 on the former site of the Mattatuck Manufacturing Facility. In 2002 the former Manufacturing plant that once helped supply World War II service members with magazine cartridges for the commonly used Springfield rifle was imploded. The facility was deemed a brown field due to the contaminants that were released into the soil during its production days.
In 1954 Edward J. O'Donnell, along with his wife Virginia, founded the Edward J. O'Donnell Funeral Home two blocks west of our new facility at 1581 East Main St in Waterbury and is where the business operated for nearly 60 years. Following Mr. O'Donnell's passing in 1990, his wife Virginia and her two sons managed the business for several years and then sold it to the Casey Family in 1998 when the name was changed to Casey-O’Donnell Family Funeral Home. It has been a long time vision of the Casey family to expand from the outdated facility to a larger more modern facility while maintaining it’s loyalty to the East End of Waterbury. We had a desire for many years to build a new facility on the former manufacturing site but unfortunately due to several environmental issues, construction on the site was not a option. Although we investigated several other locations in the area we knew that the Mattatuck Manufacturing sight would be an ideal location for our new home while helping the east end by renovating an eyesore of a brown field into a useable, visually appealing, east end icon.
After several years of legal battles with the former property owner, the Department of Environmental Protection, and the City of Waterbury ,construction was started on our new facility in the fall of 2011. Working with the City of Waterbury and a local developer the sight was revitalized into a thriving new East End icon, featuring our 18,500 square foot facility with over 275 parking spaces as well as the Waterbury Senior Center, and Saint Mary's Medical Facility
