Obituary for Bernard M. Lynch, Jr.

Bernard M. Lynch, Jr.
WATERBURY, CT – Mr. Bernard Martin Lynch, Jr. of Waterbury, Connecticut, died unexpectedly at St. Mary’s Hospital on Thursday afternoon, July 6, 2017, at the age of 57.

Bernard was born at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury, on May 4, 1960, the eldest of five children of Bernard M. Lynch, Sr. and Louise (Lombardo) Lynch, both also of Waterbury. He was a 1974 graduate of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and 1978 graduate of Holy Cross High School. In 1982, Bernard earned his Bachelor of Science in photography from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University (New York), and later earned his Masters in Interactive Journalism from Quinnipiac University (Connecticut). He held various jobs during his career, but especially enjoyed sharing his passion for photography and technology during his years teaching in Florida and Connecticut.

Although Bernard lived much of his life in Waterbury, his many years living in Miami, as well as his travels to Italy, Oaxaca (Mexico), California and elsewhere gave him a nearly endless supply of subjects upon which to focus his lens and his talents. His extensive collection of photographs, some controversial and award winning, numbers in the hundreds of thousands. One project he was especially proud of was his 2012 calendar featuring The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on the green in Waterbury, the only Basilica in Connecticut. Another of Bernard’s lifelong passions was his eclectic interest in music, whether listening, playing the piano or dancing, especially to Queen, Grace Jones, Annie Lennox or Elton John. His creative spirit and talents were always on display, as was his endless generosity.

Bernard was predeceased by his youngest sister, Maureen Dion (1963-2016) of Warwick, Rhode Island. He is survived by his parents and three siblings: Louise E. Lynch of Cheshire, CT, Daniel M. Lynch of Litchfield, CT, and Steven M. Lynch (and wife Jennifer) of Granby, CT. Bernard is also survived by four nieces, Hannah W. Lynch of Boston MA and Eliza C. Lynch of Columbia SC, Stephanie (Dion) Lenzi (and husband John) of Warwick RI, and Kaylyn Dion (and fiancée Timothy Brassil) of Warwick RI, and two nephews of Granby CT, Declan Robert Lynch and Nathan Patrick Lynch. Bernard also leaves many other relatives and friends, as well as his beloved greyhound and constant companion, Legend.

Funeral services for Mr. Lynch will be held on Wednesday July 12, 2017 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, 74 West Main St Waterbury at 9:30 a.m. Those planning to attend are kindly asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow in Mt Olivet Cemetery, Watertown CT. There are no calling hours. Casey’s Eastside Memorial Funeral Home is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
